This interdisciplinary course uses the historical figure of the Roman emperor Hadrian to build a meeting point between a moment in the history of ancient Rome and French modern literature. The course provides learners with an insight in Hadrian’s reign and the fictionalized autobiography that by Marguerite Yourcenar. Learners develop and build knowledge of Yourcenar’s life and her importance for feminism and writings on queer sexualities in France and Italy in the 20th cent.
