Food is a social, cultural and aesthetic expression of Italian identity. Italy, the center of Mediterranean culture, and in particular Rome is uniquely suited to be the site for such an exploration. Case studies of companies like Alessi, Illy, and Boffi will focus on the links between product development and communication design. The contemporary food/design climate in Italy will be illustrated and tasted.
Learning about traditional food culture and its expression through movements such as Slow Food will serve as a basis for discussions on sustainability. Each student will come away with a strong sense of Italian food history and culture.
The course will include a “kilometro zero” excursion in the region of Lazio to explore an artisanal approach to local food products such as wine, oil and cheese as agro-tourists.
