External and Exchange Fall 2020 Program Cancellation

On July 15, 2020, Education Abroad distributed notifications to all Conditionally Approved study abroad students scheduled to study abroad on an approved external or exchange programfor the fall 2020 semester. Please see below for a summary of that announcement, which included individual considerations for each program and host country. Please see our temporary COVID-19 guidance information for updates regarding future external and exchange programs. 


We know that you have been eagerly waiting for an update regarding study abroad for the fall semester. We are very sorry to inform you that after a thorough review of current circumstances, we are unable to permit you to participate in your proposed program external or excahgne program. The U.S. Department of State’s (the State Department) highest advisory level, Level 4 Global Health Advisory (Do Not Travel), remains in effect worldwide and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advisories against international travel have not changed since March. Additionally, International SOS, Temple University’s travel advisory and emergency services provider continues to advise against non-essential travel to your host country which makes it impossible for the university to safely support your participation in this study abroad program. 

As a result, your status will soon be changed from Conditionally Approved to Not Approved, and we will be notifying your program or host institution that your conditional approval to study abroad was rescinded. If you choose to participate on a study abroad program this fall 2020 semester without the approval of Temple University, the implications include: 

  • You will not be considered an active Temple student for the Fall 2020 semester, and you will need to apply for re-enrollment to Temple. Re-enrolled students must follow the most current University, Schools/Colleges and major requirements upon their return.
  • You cannot receive financial aid or scholarships for the Fall 2020 semester, and eligibility for future financial aid may be affected.
  • Transfer credit for courses taken abroad will not be accepted by Temple

This was a very difficult decision to make, but unfortunately, COVID-19 has presented many challenges resulting in circumstances that are out of our control, most notably travel and immigration restrictions. Currently most countries are restricting travellers from the U.S., where COVID-19 is not well-contained, and we have no idea if and when that might be lifted. Given the timing of the program, there also will not be sufficient time to obtain student visas by the scheduled departure date in most cases. We know this news is disappointing to you; we share your sadness and frustration about the loss of this learning opportunity. Please know that this decision was not taken lightly. Again, we are so sorry to relay this news. We look forward to working with many of you on plans to study abroad in a future term, and we wish you and yours continued health and safety.

If we awarded you a scholarship for the fall semester and you defer your enrollment to the spring, your scholarship will be transferred to the spring 2021 program.

Study Abroad in Future Semesters

Spring 2021

If you would like to defer your study abroad experience to spring 2021, please let us know. We can copy over your acceptance and a number of materials from your fall application. You will be asked to submit a new advisor recommendation specifically for the spring semester, and depending on your program, you may need to redo some or all of your application to the provider/host institution.

Terms Beyond Spring 2021

If you are in need of fall semester housing in Philadelphia as a result of this program cancellation, please refer to the housing email sent by our office on June 25. Please note that University Housing and Residential Life has extended the deadline to July 31st to cancel your housing request and have your $250 housing deposit credited to your tuition account (previously, the deadline was July 16). 

Registering for Fall Classes

Most of you were already enrolled in courses offered through Main Campus this fall, but now you should finalize your registration and check-in with your academic advising office so they are aware that you won’t be abroad this fall and review your fall schedule with you.
