Francesca Viola

Francesca A. Viola is an Assistant Professor of Journalism and a licensed attorney who teaches Television News Reporting, Television News Magazine Reporting, Broadcast News Writing and Journalism and the Law. While earning her Juris Doctor from Widener University School of Law, Professor Viola worked as a reporter for WPHL-TV 17 in Philadelphia. Earlier in her career she was part of the news team that started up Philadelphia's first ten o'clock news on WTXF-TV (now Fox-29.) Besides her work as an on-air reporter there, she also was the Associate Producer of the Ten O'Clock News, and trained writers and other staff members. She was part of an Emmy-Award winning team in the category of breaking news coverage there. In 2011, two students in her Television News Magazine Reporting class won an Emmy in the college division for a story on the show she executive produces, known as "Crossroads on TUTV." Professor Viola's Journalism and the Law class also produces a blog called First In, which focuses on First Amendment issues in the news or currently in the courts. In 2011, the blog won a Visual Communication Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.(AEJMC)
