Areas of Expertise
Professor Saito's expertise includes Japanese sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and pragmatics.
Professor Saito teaches all levels of Japanese language, as well as Japanese Communication and Culture I and II in the undergraduate program.
Professor Saito's research interests are workplace discourse, language and gender, and identity construction. In particular, she has explored Japanese men's linguistic practices in superior-subordinate interactions in a workplace. She is also interested in politeness in relation to the use or non-use of honorifics in Japanese.
She has been working for a project funded by the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (JSPS) and conducting research on identity construction and language use in Japanese workplaces.
