Temple in Spain Spring 2021 Program Cancellation

Global Temple Conference

On October 15, 2020 Education Abroad distributed notifications to all accepted study abroad students, and their families, for the spring 2021 Temple in Spain semester study abroad program. Please see below for a summary of that announcement.

Dear Temple in Spain Students and Families,

I know that you have been eagerly waiting for an update regarding study abroad for the spring semester. I am very sorry to inform you that after a thorough review of current circumstances by Education Abroad, Risk Management, and leadership in the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the spring 2021 program in Oviedo has been cancelled. This was a very difficult decision to make, but unfortunately, COVID-19 has presented many circumstances outside of Temple’s control that hinder our ability to provide you with the immersive learning experience we strive for while abiding by best health and safety practices. The decision is in line with guidance from Temple University’s travel advisory and emergency services provider, International SOS, which continues to recommend against travel to Spain based on their assessment of the current security and medical situation there.

I know this news is disappointing to you.  Please know that this decision was not taken lightly, and that everyone involved in making it shares your sadness and frustration about the loss of this learning opportunity.

If you would like to defer your acceptance to a future term, we can do that.  When we open the summer 2021 application in late November or early December, I will reach out to you to let you know how to confirm your interest in the program.  Our staff can then copy over your acceptance and most of the requirements from your spring application. You will be asked to submit a new advisor recommendation. We will follow the same process when the spring 2022 application opens.

I want to point out that summer 2021 programs will also need to be approved by university leadership, and of course we can anticipate that the circumstances related to the pandemic, as well as individual countries’ COVID-related policies, will change between now and the time that decision is made.  I share your hope that the changes will be for the better and enable us to send students to Spain in the summer.  I look forward to keeping in touch with you in the meantime, and I wish you and yours continued health and safety.

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Belinda
