COVID-19 Notice

Updated July 27, 2021

Passport processing times are significantly longer than normal.

You can apply for routine service and expect to receive a passport in 18 weeks after the passport agency receives your materials. You have the option of paying an additional $60 for expedited service to receive your passport in up to 12 weeks, and an extra $17.56 for 1-2 day delivery for the return of your completed passport.

You must have a valid passport in hand by the deadline determined by your program. To complete your program application, upload a scan of your valid passport, or acknowledge that you agree you will be required to meet your program's passport submission deadline (which may fall on the program application deadline or soon thereafter). See below for program-specific deadlines.

If you meet the following conditions, you should begin the expedited application process immediately if routine processing will not provide you with a passport in time for your program's deadline:

  • You do not currently have a valid passport

  • Passport is currently expired or will expire between now and three months beyond the conclusion of your program.

As this information is subject to change, please visit the U.S. Department of State's Passport website for details and updates. Contact your program manager if you are concerned about obtaining a passport in time for your program requirements.

Passport

You must have a valid passport to study in Japan. Plan to have your valid passport in hand by the program application deadline, as visa paperwork will be required at that time.

Passport Submission Deadlines

A student visa is required for study in Japan for a semester or academic year. The visa application process can take many weeks (see below), and you must have a valid passport to apply for your student visa. Therefore, you must submit a scan of your valid passport by the following deadlines:

  • Spring 2023 - October 1, 2022
  • Terms beyond Spring 2023 - You are advised to get your passport immediately (dates will updated periodically, check back frequently)

Student Visa

A student visa is required for study in Japan for a semester or academic year. Before you can apply for the student visa, you must apply for and obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the Japanese government. Specific instructions for the COE application are made available within the program application online approximately one month before the COE application will be due, and Education Abroad will guide you through the process.

Once you receive your COE, Education Abroad will provide detailed instructions on how to obtain your student visa; students apply for a visa independently at a consulate within their jurisdiction.
