There are several ways to choose a study abroad program, including by location, term, or type of experience. One way many students want to get started is by understanding which programs offer courses for their major. This page highlights programs especially suited to students in your school or college and can be used as a great starting point in your search.

Be sure to meet with your academic advisor as early as possible to map out which degree requirements you can plan to take abroad. Many programs include GenEd courses, minor requirements, or can help fulfill electives. If you don’t plan to take any major courses while abroad, explore the programs pages on our website to learn more about all the options.

Temple University Rome

Temple University Rome 

Temple Rome offers Media Arts for Non-production Majors in fall, spring and sometimes during the summer term. 

Temple Rome will offer a Film and Media Intensive track in Summer 2025.  

Temple University, Japan Campus

Temple University, Japan Campus offers media studies and production, communication studies, journalism, and communication social influence courses. 

Exchange Programs

Temple University has established partnerships with several universities in countries around the world to provide students with the opportunity to learn as an international student at a foreign university for a semester or year. The programs below are offered in English.

Exchange program participants earn transfer credit for approved courses and can apply those credits towards the fulfillment of their degree requirements, including major, minor, elective, and most general education requirements. 

Faculty-led Programs

Literature, Drama and Film in London (summer) 

This program offers students the opportunity to study culture and identity through literature, film, and other media in London. Program participants will receive credit for two of the three following courses, based on their preference: English 0822, English 2502, or English 3020. 

External Programs

External Programs that offer courses taught in English for theater and film majors are available in countries all over the world. Students with proficiency in languages other than English may have additional location options. Visit the External Programs Around the World page to search external study abroad programs. You can filter programs by location, major, or course subject on the external providers’ program search page. 

Arcadia, IES Abroad, TEAN, and USAC offer options for theater majors, while all the recommended providers below above offer courses for film students.

Steps to Study Abroad

Sign up for a Foundations of Study Abroad session

Attend a Foundations of Study Abroad session to learn the who, what, when, where, and why of studying abroad. Learn about different program models, options that meet your academic and career goals, personal considerations, questions to ask your academic advisor, financing and scholarships, and more. (Non-Temple students, should start with their your home school study abroad office.) 

Register for Foundations of Study Abroad.
Apply for your passport

Apply for your passport (or have it renewed). You’ll need to have a valid passport by the time you start a study abroad application. It can take anywhere from three weeks to a few months to receive a passport.

If you've never had a passport and apply during your first year at Temple, you can take advantage of the Passport Scholarship, which will reimburse you the cost of a U.S. passport.

Meet with your academic advisor

Talk with your academic advisor early (and often!) about your plan to study abroad. They can help identify the best time for you to study abroad and stay on track for graduation. Read tips for talking to your academic advisor.
