On and Off Campus Housing in Philadelphia (For Temple Students)

This resource is specifically created for Temple University students who have questions about on and off-campus housing in Philadelphia. If you are a Temple University student planning to study abroad and need to either sublet your off-campus apartment or seek new housing upon your return, Temple University's Office of Housing and Residential Life has provided the following information.  Additionally, if you need to cancel your on-campus housing, submit a cancellation request through the MyHousing Portal, specifying study abroad as your reason. Keep updated on application deadlines for on-campus housing for the spring semester to secure your spot. For those returning from study abroad, resources are available to find housing, including sublets.

Posting a Sublet

If you are leaving for study abroad and looking to sublet an off-campus apartment near Temple Main Campus

If you are studying abroad this semester and have already signed an off-campus lease, read below.

Most off-campus landlords/property managers allow you to sublet your unit while you’re gone so that another Temple student can occupy the space and pay rent while you are gone.

Before you sublet your unit: Make sure you read through your lease to confirm your landlord/property manager allows you to sublet. If they don’t, you unfortunately cannot list it because this is a legal agreement, and you have to abide by its terms once you sign it. Here are a couple of things to consider before posting a sublet:

  • The Off-Campus Living team has no way to check your individual lease if you do post a sublet, so remember, it is your individual responsibility to check the terms of your specific lease on whether this is allowed!
    • Keep an eye out for the words “sublet” vs. “relet” – you will likely be looking to sublet if you want to take back over your lease when you return. You can find some information on the difference between these two terms at this link.

How to List Your Sublet on Temple’s Off-Campus Website: Once you’ve confirmed your lease allows you to sublet your unit, follow these steps below to post your sublet on Temple’s off-campus website. This site is where Off-Campus Living refers ALL Temple students looking for housing off-campus and is the only Temple-run space to post sublets.

  • Visit Temple’s Off-Campus website – you can log in with your TU credentials.
    • Click “Add a Listing” on the black bar at the top of the page
    • Follow the steps it presents (including entering your email, property information, etc.) and you are all set
    • Once you complete these instructions, your sublet will go into a queue that we review every day and will get approved within 24-48 hours to be visible on the off-campus website for students to view.

Please feel free to reach out to the Off-Campus Living Team at  and/or give them a call at 215-204-7184, option #2 if you have questions about this process.

Searching for Sublets

If you are coming back from studying abroad and looking for sublets and/or other immediately available housing at Temple Main Campus

If you are studying abroad this semester and are looking for housing when you return, read below.

Temple’s Office of Off-Campus Living manages a website (offcampus.temple.edu) where off-campus properties post their units for Temple students. This is the only Temple-run website for off-campus listings and all properties listed on this site have provided an active Philadelphia rental license to the OCL team which means they are in compliance with all the codes/policies the city implements for rental properties.

How to Search for Sublets and/or Immediately Available properties on Temple’s Off-Campus Website: You can choose to search just for sublets or for all immediately available off-campus housing (which would also include openings at off-campus properties that are not currently leased by another Temple student):

  • Visit Temple’s Off-Campus website – you can log in with your TU credentials
    • On this site, click “Housing” from the black bar at the top of the page
    • Under the “More” feature, you have a couple options:
      • To search only for sublets: click “Sublets Only” in the very first section
      • To search for all immediately available housing: click “Move-In Now” under the Move-In Options section
      • To search for all housing options later on (for example, if you’re searching in November but won’t be back in Philadelphia until January), click “Move-In During A Month” in the Move-In Options section and select the month you’re looking to move in.

Please feel free to reach out to the Off-Campus Living Team at  and/or give them a call at 215-204-7184 if you have questions about this process.

On and Off-Campus Housing Contacts

Temple University Housing and Residential Life (UHRL)’s Housing Operations team can answer all questions/concerns about on-campus housing, meal plans, and Off-Campus Living. UHRL has a ticketing system through both of the email addresses below, so rather than email coordinators directly, we ask you to email the UHRL housing email, and it will get assigned to the person who oversees that area (you can also ask for a specific person). All student and professional staff members have access to that queue, so it will get assigned to the correct person & answered from the housing email.

  • On-campus housing email
    • For cancellation questions: ask for Mary Davis
    • For DRS/accommodations questions: ask for Mary Davis
    • For meal plan questions: ask for Trina Slaffey
  • Off-campus housing email
    • For any concerns/questions: ask for Leah Paulson Dunmire
  • Phone number for both on & off-campus housing: 215-204-7184, option #2

If you have concerns about your physical space, roommate conflicts, etc., those should be directed to the in-hall staff members (Resident Directors & Front Desk Managers), and the emails/phone numbers for all those staff members are on the building-specific pages which can be found on the Residence Halls website.
