Favorite memory of your time abroad:

It's difficult to pick just one memory as my favorite! Since my courses at Yonsei were all online, I was able to explore the country and take my classes from anywhere. Thanks to that, time spent in Busan is one of my favorite memories. I traveled there by myself to see the famous Gamcheon Culture Village and the locals were very friendly. While sitting at a café, I became good friends with these three girls sitting next to me. They were all Korean and born in Kazakhstan. They happened to be studying abroad in South Korea and one of them was attending Yonsei University like me. We planned to meet up early the next day to explore Busan together. The following day, we spent time on Haeundae beach and went sight-seeing around the beach aboard a sky capsule. We at bingsu at a local café with an ocean view and enjoyed amazing fresh seafood bbq for lunch. Then we ate dinner at a fancier traditional Korean restaurant and walked along the river to view the city lights. This was truly one of my favorite memories while in South Korea.

Ask me about:

I would like to share my personal advice on how to become more comfortable abroad in an homogeonous country. As a Black woman who has stayed in a rural area of Japan in 2018 and then traveled around South Korea during the summer of 2021, I feel it is important to better prepare and protect students of Color as we may face some different challenges while abroad. Thanks to my own experiences, I've found different ways to cope with some of these challenges and have ultimately felt very comfortable while abroad. I intend on visiting both countries again when the time is right because I truly had such a great time. Also, feel free to ask questions about the Gilman Scholarship. I was the scholarship winner for the Summer of 2021.

"For scholarships, my advice is to follow through with them because you never know how far your efforts will take you! I almost gave up on writing for the Gilman and I'm very grateful I didn't."
