    This creative critical course will challenge students' ideas of what a book can be. Students explore alternative publication formats and independent publishing. Students will explore the history of independent and underground publishing, revealing new structures and modes of production, considering how form, content, and context interact to create meaning. We will be exploring historical approaches from fanzines to riot Grrrrl zines to small hand-printed editions and one-of-a-kind books, as well as contemporary artists' books and zines. Students will consider distribution with an eye toward how publishing can foster connection and networked community. Students will learn basic book binding, book layout, and be introduced to Risograph and other printing media, well as the methods of dissemination. No printmaking experience is required. NOTE: Prior to Fall 2026, this course was titled "Survey of Etching and Relief."
