Engaging with the extensive history of print-based protest graphics and the dynamic ways contemporary artists use protest aesthetics, students will create a portfolio of print-based work. We will critically examine the aesthetics, design, production, and distribution methods used by people over the decades to make their urgent concerns visible to a larger public. We will survey the history of Revolutionary pamphleteering to modern protest movements to contemporary use of memes. This class is also a creative art studio, where students will be introduced to two of the following print processes - letterpress, relief and screen-printing - all media commonly used to produce posters and public graphics. No printmaking experience required. NOTE: Prior to Fall 2026, this course was titled "Survey of Lithography and Serigraphy."
