There are several ways to choose a study abroad program, including by location, term, or type of experience. One way many students want to get started is by understanding which programs offer courses for their major. This page highlights programs especially suited to students in your school or college and can be used as a great starting point in your search.

Be sure to meet with your academic advisor as early as possible to map out which degree requirements you can plan to take abroad. Many programs include GenEd courses, minor requirements, or can help fulfill electives. If you don’t plan to take any major courses while abroad, explore the programs pages on our website to learn more about all the options.

Temple University Rome

Temple University Rome offers a wide range of courses in anthropology, economics, English, environmental studies, gender, sexuality & women’s studies, geography & urban studies, Greek & Roman classics, history, Italian, Latin, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology. Credit-bearing internships are available.

Temple University, Japan Campus

Temple University, Japan Campus offers a wide range of courses in anthropology, Asian studies, economics, English, geography & urban studies, history, Japanese, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology. Professional development courses (CLA 1002 & CLA 2020) are often offered. Credit-bearing internships are also available.

Temple University in Spain

Temple University in Spain summer and spring programs are designed for students who are committed to furthering their Spanish language skills and understanding of Spanish culture. The summer program is open to students with any Spanish language background, including beginners and students with more advanced Spanish language skills. English-taught courses, including English literature and developmental psychology courses are available in select semesters. Internships are also available in the fall and spring semesters.  

Exchange Programs

Temple University has established partnerships with several universities in countries around the world to provide students with the opportunity to learn as an international student at a foreign university for a semester or year. Exchange program participants earn transfer credit for approved courses and can apply those credits towards the fulfillment of their degree requirements, including major, minor, elective, and most general education requirements. 

University of Göttingen (spring) organized by the College of Liberal Arts

This program offers the opportunity to take political science and anthropology courses taught in English while in the heart of Germany. Additional course offerings are available for students proficient in the German language. Visit the CLA website for details. 

Faculty-led Programs

Excavation of the Roman Villa in Artena (summer) 

This program is designed to introduce students to the techniques of archaeological fieldwork. Program participants receive credit for Art History 2117 or Anthropology 3189. 

French Language at the Sorbonne (summer) 

This program provides students with the opportunity to study French language with intensive in-class instruction. Program participants receive credit for a 4-credit French course based on their mastery level, which is determined by a language placement test before the beginning of classes. 

German Language and Contemporary Issues (summer) 

This 4- or 8-week program provides students with the opportunity to study German language with intensive in-class instruction; take a topical course from the College of Liberal Arts (CLA); or a combination of both. Language program participants receive credit for 4-credit German courses based on their mastery level, which is determined by a language placement test before departure for the program. Students taking the CLA course will receive credit for a 3-credit CLA course which changes by term. 

Honors History in Mérida (summer) 

This program is designed to help students think deeply about the history of colonialism and resistance in the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula and its legacies in the present. Program participants will receive credit for Honors History 2900. Non-Honors students can request permission to participate in the program. 

Global Good in Prague (summer) 

This program offers students the opportunity to complete Intellectual Heritage II: The Common Good, in one of Europe's oldest capitals and cultural hubs. Program participants will receive credit for Intellectual Heritage 0852. Honors students who participate will receive credit for Intellectual Heritage 0952. 

Global Good in Oviedo (summer) 

This program offers students the opportunity to complete Intellectual Heritage II: The Common Good while abroad. Program participants will receive credit for Intellectual Heritage 0852. Honors students who participate will receive credit for Intellectual Heritage 0952. 

Literature, Drama and Film in London (summer) 

This program offers students the opportunity to study culture and identity through literature, film, and other media in London. Program participants will receive credit for two of the three following courses, based on their preference: English 0822, English 2502, or English 3020. 

African Urban Hip-Hop in Ghana (summer) 

On this four-week program, students will explore how hip-hop can be a means to create solidarity between African descendants and economically disenfranchised peoples across the globe. Students will earn 3 credits in Africology and African American Studies 2100 (or 2900 for honors students). 

Latin American Studies Semester (LASS)

This unique language immersion program provides students with an intensive Spanish language experience with an interdisciplinary study of life and contemporary issues in Latin America. Students need at least one semester of college-level Spanish language to apply. More information and the application is available on the LASS webpage.  

External Programs

External programs that offer a variety of courses taught in English are available in countries all over the world, and students with proficiency in languages other than English may have additional location options. Visit the External Programs Around the World page to search approved external study abroad programs. External program participants earn transfer credit for approved courses and can apply those credits towards the fulfillment of their degree requirements, including major, minor, elective, and most general education requirements.

Steps to Study Abroad

Sign up for a Foundations of Study Abroad session

Attend a Foundations of Study Abroad session to learn the who, what, when, where, and why of studying abroad. Learn about different program models, options that meet your academic and career goals, personal considerations, questions to ask your academic advisor, financing and scholarships, and more. (Non-Temple students, should start with their your home school study abroad office.) 

Apply for your passport

Apply for your passport (or have it renewed). You’ll need to have a valid passport by the time you start a study abroad application. It can take anywhere from three weeks to a few months to receive a passport.

If you've never had a passport and apply during your first year at Temple, you can take advantage of the Passport Scholarship, which will reimburse you the cost of a U.S. passport.

Meet with your academic advisor
